“Henri Rousseau’s journey began in Laval, where he entered the world. His initial occupation as an inspector at a toll station on the outskirts of Paris (1871-85) led to the moniker ‘le douanier’ (the customs officer) that he is often referred to by. However, it was after his retirement that he ventured wholeheartedly into the realm of painting. His debut took place in 1886 at the Salon des Indépendants, marking the inception of his artistic pursuits. Notably, the Collection features one of his captivating jungle fantasy pieces.

Rousseau’s artistic development bore traces of his artistic influences. The compositions of Paul Gauguin seemingly left an imprint on his creations, while his meticulous technique drew inspiration from traditional Salon painters such as Gérôme. His unique blend of these influences contributed to his distinctive style. While his work garnered a small coterie of admirers – including influential figures like Picasso, Léger, and the poet Apollinaire – Rousseau’s artistic approach positioned him on the fringes of conventional artistic norms.

Henri Rousseau’s oeuvre embodies a captivating journey from a toll station to the world’s artistic stage. His jungle fantasies and unique creative amalgamation have left an indelible mark on art history, and his distinct eccentricity serves as a testament to his enduring influence.”
