“Konan Tanigami (1879 – 1928) left an indelible mark as a nihonga painter and printmaker, celebrated for his mastery in crafting kacho-e, also known as ‘bird-and-flower pictures.’ Hailing from Hyogo Prefecture, his artistic legacy is intricately tied to the production of five distinct print albums featuring Western flowers. These albums, brought to life under the auspices of the Kyoto-based Unsodo around 1917-1918, stand as a testament to his artistry and creative vision. The series, aptly titled ‘A Picture Album of Western Plants and Flowers’ (Seiyo Soka Zofu), is thoughtfully organized to reflect the seasons’ shifting tapestry.

A pinnacle moment arrived in 1917 when Konan presented a series of 24 peony prints at the Teiten, the imperial exhibition. These vivid and meticulously executed prints showcased his dedication to floral depictions and his unparalleled ability to capture the essence of each subject.

Further enriching his artistic contributions, Konan’s floral compositions found their way into the pages of three volumes, collectively known as ‘A Book of Flower Shapes and Forms.’ These volumes, published in 1923 and 1926, encapsulated his profound understanding of floral anatomy and his skill in translating nature’s intricacies onto the canvas.
