“Bairei Kono (1844 – 1895) found his roots and creative expression in Kyoto, where his artistic journey unfolded. Early in his life, he embarked on a path of painting, immersing himself in the artistic tapestry of the city. His artistic education led him through a diverse array of influences, a journey that began with Maruyama-style painting under the guidance of Nakajima Raisho during his formative years. As time progressed, his artistic pursuits shifted towards the Shijo-school, where Shiokawa Bunrin assumed the role of his mentor during his twenties. Additionally, Bairei’s quest for knowledge led him to multiple Nanga-school artists who contributed to shaping his artistic foundation.

Within the vibrant art scene of Kyoto, Bairei emerged as a prominent figure, contributing significantly to the establishment of the Kyoto Prefectural School of Painting. This pivotal institution was a testament to his dedication and impact on the artistic landscape. In a milestone move in 1881, Bairei established his own studio, a space that eventually became a hub for nurturing emerging talents.

Bairei Kono’s artistic signature shines most brightly through his illustrated books and kacho-e, a genre celebrated for its depictions of birds and flowers. In 1883, his magnum opus, ‘Bairei kacho gafu’ (Bairei’s Album of Flowers and Birds), captivated audiences with its exquisite portrayal of paired birds and flowers across the changing seasons. Noteworthy is Bairei’s masterful fusion of Western artistic elements into his creations while maintaining the intrinsic essence of the woodblock print medium, a testament to his artistic integrity.

His prowess was not confined to artistic achievement alone.
